YEAR ONEJames Gordon arrived in Gotham City from Chicago for his new job on the police force. Bruce Wayne returned to his home after 18 years abroad. Gordon didn't fit in well with the corruption that was running rampant in the police force. Wayne began checking out the night-life, following up on the vow he made to his parents. His first time out was disastrous - he was stabbed, shot, and picked up by the police (though he escaped). While thinking of his father, Bruce received an omen - a bat flew through a window in his house. Gordon ended a hostage situation before it turned ugly, gaining the attention of the media and the adoration of the people. Batman made his first appearance; Gordon briefed the force on the sightings of this new vigilante. Batman began taking on the corrupted higher-ups of Gotham society. Gordon believed that the Batman was actually Assistant District Attorney Harvey Dent. He and his partner, Sarah Essen, witnessed the Batman first hand and chased him into an abandoned apartment complex. With the building on the condemned list, it was ordered immediately destroyed. After five explosions, a SWAT team entered. Batman used an ultrasonic device to attracted thousands of bats to his location; the creatures provided him with enough cover to escape. Gordon continued to grow closer to his partner as his marriage continued to falter. Selina Kyle quit the life of prostitution and began robbing in a cat outfit. Batman and Dent, who'd been working together for a while, took down a major drug dealer, the dealer implicated a policeman - Flass. Gordon admitted to his wife that he'd been having an affair with his partner. Barbara gave birth to James Gordon, Jr. Police Commissioner Loeb ordered a hit on Gordon's family - Jim was able to save his wife, the Batman rescued his newborn son. Flass squealed on the commissioner during his testimony.

Captain Gordon investigated a crime scene where his men had discovered an abandoned factory with scores of dead bodies - all bleached white with a deathly smile. The Batman soon arrived. He felt the killer was 'just practicing' - some of the people had been dead for weeks. The next evening, a newscaster transformed into one of the pale, grinning corpses on the air. A clown appeared behind her and threatened Gotham City. Gordon headed up the investigation. After checking out the scene and speaking briefly with Batman, he headed to a press conference, then went to protect the man "the Joker" (as the press called him) threatened by name. Though surrounded by police, the man died anyway - apparently poisoned. A few blocks away a disturbance was created when some criminally insane patience escaped from a hospital. Batman took them down while Gordon and his men checked things elsewhere. The Joker used his stolen tv van to broadcast the next morning, where he named his next victim. Batman analyzed two blood samples - one with quick acting poison, one with slow acting. Joker attacked that night, Batman had him, but was distracted and the madman escaped. Bruce, in disguise as an investigative reporter, went to Ace Chemical Plant - where Joker's two named victims were initial contributors. He interviewed two men, one who had received bleached spots on his face when chemicals splashed up. Ace Chemical was also the last known sighting of the Red Hood. Joker's next list of targets included Bruce Wayne. He infected himself while under police protection. Alfred took him to the hospital and administered the cure on the way. Batman got a call in to Gordon - he told him to have the city shut off the water supply from the old reservoir - Joker planned to poison the city. Batman stopped the Joker before he could release his poison into the water, but he was unable to simply kill the madman. He met with Gordon after Joker was placed in Arkham's care. Gordon showed him a spotlight with a bat inside. Gordon is captain. Gordon (internal): "That Red Hood character a few months back was the first sign." The signal was displayed for the first time.

After Bruce Wayne's first year back in Gotham City, Wayne Enterprises began making some changes. Mass layoffs occurred, and he reminded the board of directors that it was to continue to be modeled in his vision. After his mother died, one of the "downsized" employees (Ted Krosby) began having visions detailing peoples' deaths. He hooked up with a small time criminal at a bar, they formed a team hoping to cash in on his visions. When they targeted Krosby's former employer, Batman stopped them. Krosby was detained and psychologically evaluated. Batman continued learning what was best in his line of work, training in all his free time. At a meeting with his financial advisor, Bruce was hounded for the second time by a TV reporter wanting an interview. The reporter ran an expose on Ted Krosby, hoping to get back at Wayne for continuously brushing him off. Bruce visited Krosby in jail, but the man had to be taken away when he began babbling violently. In the parking lot, the reporter approached Bruce again - he told him how he'd also lost his parents at a young age. When Krosby was being transported to Arkham Asylum, his partner broke him loose. Back at his place, Krosby began killing and eating the people in his group. He didn't stop there - in all, 348 were killed in the apartment building alone. Bruce was visited at home by the reporter; Krosby went to see his father for the first time in 26 years. He killed him and ate him. Batman arrived and stopped him from killing his father's wife. After he got the woman to safety, Krosby attacked him wearing his father's skin as a "costume." Batman defeated him, and Krosby wandered off and died in the way he'd envisioned. Bruce finally gave the reporter an interview.

After taking down one of Joe the Undertaker's henchmen, Batman encountered a man who appeared to have some sort of plant growing from his mouth. A woman clad in leaves watched him from a rooftop. As Batman neared, she kissed a man, causing him to leap from the building. Batman saved him, but the woman escaped. An episode with two men working for her caused Poison Ivy to remember other men who'd wronged her. She thought Batman would be different. She used her plants to kill the two men. Bruce attended a charity function the next night. He was introduced to a botanist, Pamela Isley. During a speech, everyone but him began sprouting mushrooms (he'd stayed away from the champagne). Isley attacked Lt. Gordon, who was there as security. As Poison Ivy, she offered a cure to anyone who was willing to pay for it. Seeing Bruce being a bit heroic, Ivy gave him a special dose by kiss. Batman went after her - without an antidote, he'd be dead by the end of the night. He got to her. After he asked for the antidote for Bruce Wayne, she kissed him - the only cure was a second kiss from her. Realizing he was going to make it, he took her down and delivered her to Arkham Asylum.

Captain Gordon, D.A. Harvey Dent, and Batman were attempting to take down Carmine "The Roman" Falcone. Falcone was trying to launder his money through one of Bruce Wayne's banks; Dent and Batman set fire to his storehouse of cash. On Halloween, two key players in the case were murdered and Dent's house was bombed. On Thanksgiving, 5 more were killed. The Joker escaped from Arkham and began searching for the "holiday" killer. He killed a man from a rival gang and attacked Dent in his own home. On Christmas, one of Falcone's men was killed. Batman caught the Joker; Falcone's son was killed on New Year's Eve. More were killed on Valentine's day, and Bruce was taken under by Poison Ivy's spell. Catwoman was able to break the spell, but more died on St. Patrick's day. April Fool's Day brought out Holiday again, but this time, no one was killed. More were killed on Mother's Day; based on a connection to Falcone, Dent and Gordon went after Bruce Wayne. Another murder on Father's Day, this time a former mob boss. The coroner was found dead on Independence Day. While prosecuting, Harvey Dent had acid thrown in his face by Maroni. Dent later escaped from the hospital. Holiday showed himself: Alberto Falcone, thought to be the New Year's Eve victim. Dent, now "Two-Face", released the deadliest from Arkham and killed Falcone. Dent was arrested and the Holiday killings were over.

As newly appointed Commissioner Gordon gave an interview about his relationship with the Batman, the vigilante took down some thieves. Dr. Thompkins introduced Bruce to her friend Rachel Caspian. Bruce was immediately attracted to her, only to learn that Rachel was about to take vows to join a convent. Rachel's father, Judson Caspian, returned to Gotham to see his daughter through. Caspian's alter-ego, the Reaper, also returned to town. The Reaper's form of vigilantism left dead bodies. Their first first encounter almost killed the Dark Knight. Bruce took out the gun that killed his parents (he'd had it since shortly after his parents' deaths) and began practicing with it. Later, he met Rachel for lunch. Batman met with Gordon about the Reaper. He made a truce with a mob boss to work with them to take down the Reaper. He was assigned a partner - Joe Chill - and he believed Chill was his parents' murderer. Batman and Chill planted a seed in the underworld trying to draw out the Reaper. Bruce convinced Rachel to stay her decision about becoming a nun. Batman and Chill went up against the Reaper, but he again escaped. Bruce proposed to Rachel. In a major showdown between the Reaper, the mob, Batman, and the GCPD, the Reaper was believed killed. Batman took Chill to the place where his parents died, but before he could kill the shooter, the Reaper did. In a final battle, the Reaper fell from a high-rise construction site and died. Bruce, after seeing the Reaper's face, went to console Rachel. She left him for the convent in attempt to atone for her father's sins.

Gordon worked the scene of a murdered family. He was having a difficult time adjusting to the politics of his new job as commissioner. Bruce Wayne attended a Wayne Foundation function - a center for abused children was being opened. Long hours and short tempers continued to put a strain on Barbara and James Gordon's marriage. The Commissioner went to the scene of another family murder. Batman learned both families, one poor, the other rich, were linked by a new designer drug called Boost. Gordon found another link - child abuse. The parents were killed in the way they abused their children. Batman investigated that angle and found that two of the men Bruce Wayne met at the new child abuse center had special-ops training in Central America. They were the killers. Batman took them down; James Gordon said his goodbyes to his wife and son - they were moving back to Chicago.

Gotham's new DA reopened the Alberto "Holiday" Falcone case. He was released into the custody of his brother. The Falcone family made an assassination attempt on Harvey Dent at Arkham Asylum. A policeman and the former commissioner were found dead - hanged, both with a note. The Hang-man killer continued knocking off cops and former cops. Batman witnessed Two-Face cut Gordon down from a noose, Gordon would not let Batman believe that Dent was the killer. Bruce Wayne witnessed the deaths of thingy Grayson's parents and took the boy in. Though he lost more officers, Gordon captured Dent. Batman revealed himself as Bruce Wayne to thingy Grayson. Dent escaped custody during his trial; he then shot DA Porter (whom he'd been sleeping with) dead. Catwoman and Batman discovered that Sofia Gigante Falcone was the Hangman. Dent killed her, then he and his partners-in-crime escaped (unknowingly) into the Batcave. thingy and Batman defeated them all. Batman gained a partner: Robin

ROBIN'S FIRST TEST Dick Grayson's "final exam" before becoming Robin was to not let Batman catch him in the city for an entire night. In doing this, Robin also brought down a major bust on one of Gotham's crime families.

The son and daughter of Joe Chill brought back the Reaper to take down Batman. The new Reaper saw the real Reaper kill his father (see Year Two), stole his body, and the gun that was his father's. The new Reaper (Joe Chill's son) kidnapped the daughter of the original Reaper (who was once engaged to Bruce Wayne) and held her as bait for Batman. Robin came in and helped Batman escape and defeat the Reaper.

Batman met with a small time crook willing to give him Dr. Darrk for protection from him. Darrk and one of his League of Assassin associates came up behind the man and stabbed him. Batman chased the assassins off and went back to the informant. He died telling Batman where he could find Darrk. Batman caught up with Darrk on a train in the Orient. A number of his assassins were able to subdue him. Darrk was traveling with a woman named Talia, who was at Batman’s side when he awakened unmasked. She explained to him that her father and Darrk, ex-associates, were at odds. Darrk’s men came for the two and took them into an arena. Talia was tied to a stake and a bull was loosed. Batman was able to turn the bull on Darrk’s men and capture the ringleader. He and Talia left with him as their captive. Awaiting the train, Darrk caught Batman by surprise, blinding him. As he rushed him with a knife, Talia shot him. Darrk fell onto the tracks and was killed by the oncoming train. Batman embraced the shaken Talia.

Robin, sneaking back into his dorm room, was captured. A few days later, Bruce received a photograph of his ward bound. He went into the cave, where Ra’s Al Ghul and his guard, Ubu, approached him. Bruce was astonished they were there, but Ra’s explained how he’d realized who the Batman was (but not how they’d gotten into the cave). Ra’s daughter, Talia, had also been kidnapped; he’d received a photograph much like Bruce had. After analysis of the photos, Bruce found a chemical he knew was used by the Brotherhood of the Demon – a group located in Calcutta. The three flew there in Ra’s jet. Soon after landing, they received a tip on where the Brotherhood might be. At the location, a trained leopard attacked Batman; the only thing they found inside was a map of the Himalayas. Mt. Nanda Devi was their next stop. A sniper attacked, and it appeared Ra’s and Ubu were hit. Batman took down the sniper and continued on. He walked into their stronghold, knowing they wouldn’t kill him. He explained to them he’d known the whole time that Ra’s was behind it all. He untied Robin and they unloaded on the guards. Ra’s walked out and surprised him with the reason for the elaborate game: his daughter, Talia, was in love with him. He wanted to make sure Batman was worthy of her.

After receiving a crate with a dead body in it, Bruce found Ra’s al Ghul in Wayne Manor. Ra’s explained that treachery within his own ranks may be inadvertently releasing a plague. Batman set out to find Talia and Striss, the man who’d attacked her father and taken the chemical. Following a lead, Batman joined Ra’s al Ghul on his jet to the swamps of Louisiana. He found Talia – she had Striss at gunpoint. During the struggle, he fell onto a container of the chemical and died. Ra’s arrived with the antidote for his daughter and the Detective.

Commissioner Gordon showed Batman the dead body of Mason Sterling. The brain was missing. Batman checked out a lead on some imported cigarettes found in Sterling’s pocket. Talia bailed him out when he was temporarily blinded and attacked by some miscreants. Talia led Batman to the killer, but “accidentally” injected him with amnesia instead of a truth serum. Not completely believing her, he dropped Talia off at her father’s ship and summoned Alfred in a helicopter. They followed what Batman suspected was a submarine hidden beneath the ship. When it stopped, Batman dove into the water and located Ra’s al Ghul’s base. Inside, he and his daughter were with a scientist and the brain of Sterling. The scientist had devised a way to communicate with it. Ra’s blocked off Batman’s path and escaped.

Bruce Wayne was reported dead in a plane crash. Batman visited Commissioner Gordon to inform him he’d be out of the country for a while. Batman shook down “Matches” Malone; the gangster was killed while attempting to shoot the Batman. Acting as Malone (with an animatronic Batman), Batman caught up with Dr. Harris Blaine. An acolyte of Ra’s Al Ghul attacked them. Batman chased the attacker, Lo Ling, onto a rooftop. Ling fell; Batman saved him. Ling’s culture prescribed that he grant Batman a life debt, but he was torn due to already having one with Ra’s al Ghul.
