Robin posed as Matches Malone while Batman and Lo Ling duel. After Batman defeated him, Ling accepted his life debt to the Batman. After Ling departed, Robin got out of the Matches Malone outfit so that Batman could get into it. Malone (Batman), Dr. Harris Blaine, and Lo Ling set off to find Ra’s al Ghul in Switzerland. Upon landing, Malone separated from the others. Batman soon encountered Talia and Ubu. They escaped him after he was separated from them by skiing champion Molly Post. She joined their crusade – her fiancé had been victimized by the Demon’s Head. The four got into Ra’s al Ghul’s lair. Batman defeated Ubu. Talia showed them her father was dead; it was confirmed by the doctor. As she escorted them out, Ra’s body lowered into a vat of chemicals. Minutes later, he rose from the dead.

Ra’s al Ghul rushed at the group leaving his base. With one punch, he immobilized Lo Ling. Batman was no match for him, either. He and his daughter departed in a hovercraft. Molly Post disabled the vehicle by throwing a ski pole into its rotor. As it crashed, the pole broke and shot back at her. Batman got her medical attention and began tracking the Demon’s Head. He caught up with them in a desert, where Ra’s challenged him to a sword duel. They appeared to be evenly matched until the sting of a scorpion felled Batman. As her father walked way victorious, Talia administered antidote through a kiss to her beloved. After a quick recovery, Batman caught Ra’s by surprise and took him down.

Batman investigated the League of assassins, who were moving in on a circus owned by Kathy Kane (the former Batwoman). A costumed man calling himself the Bronze Tiger took Batman down and killed Kane. As Batman knelt down beside her body, Ra’s al Ghul appeared. He fingered the League’s Sensei (hoping Batman would take the rival group down). Batman infiltrated their headquarters. The Sensei put him up against Bronze Tiger. During their battle, Batman was hit with a poisoned dart. Knowing the shooter was an undercover man sent by Ra’s al Ghul, the Sensei killed him instantly. Bronze Tiger refused to let the League merely dispose of Batman’s body, which was the last straw – Sensei set all the remaining assassins against him. By the time Batman could recover, Bronze Tiger was gone – the only remains were his mask and a trail of blood.

Batman moved in on the League of Assassins, who was unloading some explosives. Ra’s al Ghul’s bodyguard, Lurk, attacked him. While they fought, the League escaped (Lurk was sent to stop them as well). A group of religious leaders arrived in Gotham City. One refused the guards Commissioner Gordon had assigned to them citing his unwillingness to be near violence. Batman spoke with the geologist he’d rescued from the League earlier and learned of a possible plan to set the explosives off on a fault line, causing an earthquake. By the time Batman got to the site, the explosives were planted and buried. On his way to warn the dignitaries (the target for the earthquake), his whirlybat was shot down by the GCPD. He survived the crash and got a warning to Gordon and the religious leaders. One of the men refused to leave and was shot by the Sensei masquerading as another of them. Batman went into the house after the Sensei, but Talia shot him with a tranquilizer. When Batman awakened in her care, he learned that her father went in after the Sensei and neither had been seen since.

After shooting Robin (Dick Grayson) in the arm, Joker taunts Batman. Batman saved Robin from falling off the rooftop. The next morning, Joker was tied up on Arkham's doorstep. While Dick recovered, news reported that the Boy (now Teen) Wonder was dead. After making a walk-through at Crime Alley, Batman returned to the Batmobile to find it's front tires missing. Batman apprehended young Jason Todd, tire thief. He told Batman that his mother was dead and his father was "doin' time." Batman enrolled the kid in a school for boys.
Batman awakened from a dream where he killed the Joker to find himself captive in the sewer. He'd been captured by a cult and was being brainwashed. He tried to remember what had happened - homeless people began disappearing, murders happening where the killers escaped into the sewers; he'd been shot and drug into their sanctuary. After a week with him gone, Robin went to Commissioner Gordon. Over 500 missing persons reports had been filed in that week. Deacon Blackfire, the cult's messiah, believed that Batman had been converted. Batman took part in a raid on a mafia don's house with the cult. He escaped with a renegade member, but the drugs and lack of food played with his mind. Robin infiltrated the cult to find his missing partner. After clearing his head, Batman went back to take down the deacon. He was again caught. Blackfire called successful hits on the mayor and entire city council of Gotham City. Batman escaped his execution and Robin found him in an underground facility filled with dead bodies. The cult robbed an armory; Gordon found police records on Blackfire ranging back to the 1920s. The governor placed Gotham under martial law; Gordon was shot at a press conference. National Guardsmen were sent into the sewers after the cult and were ambushed and nearly wiped out completely. The governor asked all Gothamites to evacuate the city. Batman and Robin reached the surface and called for Alfred, who came and picked them up. After a week outside Gotham, Bruce and Jason decided it was time to return and take their city back. The deacon welcomed his impending "martyr's death." Batman visited Gordon, who seemed to be recovering from the gunshot wound nicely. He informed the Commissioner of his plans. The Dynamic Duo returned to Gotham in a modified, armored, monster-truck Batmobile. They reached Gotham Square and took to the sewers on foot. Underground, Robin sustained a gunshot wound to his leg. Batman gave him more ammo (they were using guns that fired tranquilizer darts) and continued on. He reached Deacon Blackfire and refused to kill him. With his followers looking on, Batman defeated Blackfire until he begged for death. Robin took down a sniper that was trying to end the fight early. The mob turned on their messiah and gave him his death. Order was restored in Gotham City.

A KGB agent informed Gordon and the CIA of an extreme assassin that was on the loose - suspected to be in Gotham City. The KGBeast was not a part of the Soviet government, but of an off-shoot faction. CIA agent Bundy told what he knew - the KGBeast had already killed two in Gotham. The CIA made it clear - they did not want Batman to be involved. Batman was listening in, however, and went after a man he suspected could be a target. He was too late, but did uncover a list of possible targets. A banquet was poisoned - 80 were killed. Batman gave chase, but the KGBeast got away. Gordon and Batman set up a trap. Batman was waiting in ambush to nab the assassin, but he was too good and escaped. The KGBeast shot down a passenger jet, but it turned out to be a decoy. He then attacked a pair of senators in a high-rise hotel. Batman again gave chase, but the Beast cut off his own hand to escape. They prepared for the President's arrival in Gotham. When the President arrived, Batman kidnapped him to safety. With the death toll now over 100, the Beast was fitted for a new "hand" - a custom fit automatic gun with a bayonet. Robin saved a decoy of the President from a suicide bomber while Batman escorted the real President. Batman was shot in the next attack, but the Beast was also injured - his eye. Batman chased the Beast into the sewer system. After a struggle, Batman forced him into a trap and secured the door.

After escaping Arkham, the Joker looked for a place to set up shop. He thought back of his former wife and when he was a struggling stand-up comic. He settled on a run-down carnival and headed to the Gordon's. He shot Barbara, stripped her down, and took pictures of her naked while his men captured the Commissioner. Batman visited Barbara in the hospital and learned she'd lost use of her legs. The Joker thought of the night his wife and unborn child died as he tried to bring Commissioner Gordon to the brink of insanity. Batman received an invitation to the Joker's carnival; the maniac reflected on his first night of crime as the "Red Hood," and his first meeting with Batman. Batman saved Gordon and captured his adversary.

www.filecabin.com/up1/1152734868-death in the family.JPG[/IMG] Batman and Robin busted up a kiddie-porn ring. Batman chastised Robin for jumping the gun and being reckless. After talking to Alfred, Bruce put Jason on inactive duty. Jason was furious and ran out. Gordon contacted Batman about the Joker's escape from Arkham. The mad-man showed his "very own cruise missile" to his gang. He pondered stopping his life of crime to get into international politics. Wandering around where he used to live, Jason came upon some evidence that the mother he knew might not be his biological mother. He left Bruce and Alfred a note and went to find out the truth. Batman discovered that Joker had a nuclear weapon and planned to sell it to Middle-Eastern terrorists. Bruce and Jason bumped into each other in Beirut. They tracked down the Joker and foiled his bomb sale. It exploded, but the warhead was not damaged. Joker escaped and Jason ruled out the first candidate on his list of three. Lady Shiva Woosan was ruled out as number 2 on the list, leaving Dr. Sheila Haywood. They found her and Bruce left them to get to know each other. Jason soon learned that his mother was being used by the Joker. Disobeying direct orders from Batman, Jason suited up and went to save his mother. She betrayed him to the Joker and he was savagely beaten and left unconscious. Joker tied up Haywood and planted a bomb. Batman returned in time to see the building explode. In the wreckage, he found his worst fear - Jason was dead. Bruce returned to Gotham and had a funeral for the two victims. Superman came to him with the news that Joker was the new United Nations ambassador from Iran. With the post came immunity from prosecution on any crime he committed beforehand. Superman was asked by the state department to stop Batman from interfering in the proceedings. When Joker unleashed some of his toxic gas in the assembly, Superman inhaled it and flew off. Foiled again, Joker set off an explosion and tried to escape. Batman chased him to the roof where he stowed away on the get-away helicopter. After a gunfight, the pilot was killed and the aircraft crashed. Batman was saved by Superman, but the Joker's body was not recovered.

Gordon called Batman in to see a body - it had been completely pulverized - no bone in it still intact. The body had no physical marks on it. Batman staked out a drug shipment on a tip off. It was broken up by a man calling himself the Bonecursher. He used a sonic device to destroy things. He killed himself when cornered by Batman. Bruce Wayne was introduced to Jeannie Bowen, a woman searching for her brother. She believed he'd worked for WayneTech, so he gave her a tour. Dr. Kenneth Harbinger remembered Roy, her brother. Gordon called Batman about another Bonecrusher attack. A homeless man in a mission acted out with exact movement and speech as the Bonecrusher. Cornered again, Bonecrusher killed himself. The bum turned out to be Roy, Jeannie's brother. He had no memories of the last six months. Bruce began researching what might have happened to Roy after a biochip was found implanted in his head. Bonecrusher broke into Wayne Manor; Alfred saved Bruce and his houseguests Jeannie and Roy by shooting him with a tranquilizer dart. Bonecrusher, for a third time, self-destructed. Roy remembered what the project was - they were creating remote controlled soldiers. Bruce found Harbinger dead, but found his log file. In the file, Bruce learned that Harbinger had been the controller of the Bonerushers and that he'd permanently moved into another body. Bruce tried to stop the project, but they set him up as a communist and he was arrested. Wayne was questioned about the years he spent in Europe and Asia. Gordon offered him what support he could, hinting that he knew more than Wayne realized. Bruce and his two lawyers were shot by a homeless man. Bruce, the only survivor, was in a coma. Since Batman had not been seen in weeks, Gordon asked one of his men to say that they'd worked a case together. As Bruce was released from the hospital, Roy stumbled into the cave. He offered to let Bruce use his body while he was confined to a wheelchair. A witness against Wayne, the man who taught him detective skills, told the cartel that Wayne was indeed Batman. This theory was shot down when Batman made a bust (Bruce was using Roy's body). Bruce and Alfred played with the biochips until Bruce was in a body near Harbinger and Riordan (the cartel's leaders). He got needed info, including a sketch, to Gordon. Harbinger was force to take another body. Batman (again in Roy's body) was after him. They were both killed in the fight; Gordon and his men recovered the documents Harbinger was carrying and cleared Bruce Wayne. Gordon visited Bruce as he recovered and confronted him about his houseguest being in Batman's costume. The fiasco was finally over, though Jeannie, Ducard (the detective), and possibly Gordon knew Bruce's secret.

Police responded to a call reporting Batman's death. He was rushed to a hospital, but could not be saved. Someone at the hospital's morgue leaked the story to the press. It made front page news the next day and reached Arkham, Dick, and Alfred. Gordon paid last respects to his fallen friend. A second Batman corpse was found. A third and forth Batman killing was discovered. All four were experts in their fields: a race car driver, a demolitionist, a chemist, and a body builder. A fifth turned up, a gymnast. Gordon investigated by visiting a cross-bow expert (a cross-bow had killed the gymnast) who'd recently arrived in Gotham. He greeted Gordon in a Batman costume and told him that Bruce Wayne had sent it to him for a masquerade. The man died while Gordon was there. The Commissioner went to see Wayne. While talking to Wayne, Alfred brought in a package that had arrived - a Batman costume laced with acid. While under police protection, Bruce confided to Alfred that all the dead men had been his trainers in route to becoming the Batman. Alfred ran a diversion on the cops while Bruce headed down to the cave. Another Batman was found. The real Batman deduced the killer and took him down before he could strike again - he was one of the alleged dead trying to break ties from Batman before one of his foes killed him.

Batman was unable to stop the forth hit on a mob boss in as many weeks. After years in prison, Anthony Zucco (who killed the Flying Graysons) was up for parole; Alfred spoke at the hearing. Dick returned to Wayne Manor at Alfred's request to speak to Bruce. Batman attempted to stop the fifth mob killing and was in the boss's house when it was bombed. Nightwing saved Batman from the rubble after the bombing. Batman left his former partner in a huff. Alfred, after returning home from the parole hearing, thought back on when Bruce took in "Master Richard." Nightwing came back to the manor looking for Batman. He and Alfred expressed their concerns about Bruce since Jason's death. Nightwing again set out to find Batman. From a group of crime bosses, Batman learned of Zucco's book - a ledger he'd kept about every crime and every criminal for the past 30 years. Alfred told Dick Zucco was getting out. He went to the release and found Batman watching. They witnessed as he was gunned down while leaving the prison. Back in the cave, Batman refused to let Nightwing help him and vowed never to have a partner again. All the crime families began to aggressively search out Zucco's book. Batman threatened them to leave it alone. The parole board member who'd voted Zucco out also searched for it. Nightwing went to the orphanage where he and Zucco had both spent time and found the ledger. He was attacked by Taft, the parole board member. The book was lost in their struggle. Dick visited his parents' gravesite.

After the death of Robin (Jason Todd), Batman continues his thoughtless rampage. After being reminded by Alfred, he began being a detective again - Two-Face was at work. A mysterious young boy began tracking Batman (calling him "Bruce"), and looking for Nightwing. After Dick left the Titans, he went to Haly's Circus. The young boy tracked him there and confronted him with pictures of Batman. The boy knew he was once Robin, and knew about the last Robin. Dick became co-owner of the circus. Tim Drake (the boy's name) came clean to Dick about what he knew and how he knew it. Dick took Tim to Wayne Manor, then to the Batcave before leaving him with Alfred to find Batman. Tim convinced Dick that Batman needed Robin to survive. Batman and Two-Face continued to cross paths without confrontation. The former Dynamic Duo were lured into Two-Face's trap. When he got them there, he detonated it, leaving them under rubble. Tim took the Robin costume and convinced Alfred to take him to where their homing devices left off. There, he confronted Two-Face (who retreated) and rescued Batman and Nightwing. Robin slipped a homing device on Dent, and the three tracked him down and captured him. Back at Wayne Manor, Tim's future as a crime fighter was discussed.

Batman began investigating a "fallen angel" seen during a festival in Gotham City. The angel Azrael, an assassin of the Order of St. Dumas, had been shot up and had fallen through a window. He had enough life left to get to his son. He left his son with a package of directions for his life. He followed his father's directions to Switzerland, where he learned the truth about his father, and that he would succeed his father as Azrael. He'd been receiving programming and teaching from his father since birth. The "System" was in his subconscious. Oracle was able to trace a sigil found by Batman on a sword. It was the mark of the Order of St. Dumas, a cult-like organization that appeared to have vanished in the 15th Century. Bruce and Alfred made for Switzerland. In the mountains, they found a cottage located inside landmarks that resembled the sigil Batman had found on Azrael's sword. The cottage exploded, taking Wayne's helicopter with it. Nomoz, the trainer of Azrael, go them to safety in an underground shelter. Bruce and Alfred escaped the helicopter wreckage to be caught in the ensuing avalanche. Batman emerged with Alfred. He jumped onto a hovercraft that rose from the snow and was met by Azrael. Their fight was short; the avenging angel returned to the craft and escaped. Numoz told Azrael about LeHah, the man who killed his father, and about the demon Biis, the Order's enemy. Together they began searching out the Order's other members to warn them about their rogue brother, LeHah. At their first stop, they were met by Biis. Bruce and Alfred saw the boy who was Azrael fall from a window, as his father had. Alfred stayed with the boy, while Bruce went in to see what was happening. He was met by Biis, who ambushed, drugged, and captured him. With Wayne taken, Alfred and Nomoz took the injured Azrael and sought Biis. The demon (actually LeHah) recognized Wayne, and the costume underneath his clothing, and plotted to take his fortune. He murdered another member of the Order of St. Dumas. Azrael, quickly recovered, found a pattern in the murders. They went to meet him at the next stop. Azrael made short work of the guards; LeHah killed again and escaped. They traveled west again to Houston, where LeHah was torturing Wayne at an oil refinery he owned. Azrael burst in and attacked LeHah, his flaming sword setting the refinery aflame. They rescued Wayne as the plant exploded. Azrael remembered his name, and that of his father: Jean Paul Valley.
