Superman confronted Batman as to why he wasn't attempting to clear his name. Batman evaded him, continuing to show that Bruce Wayne no longer existed. Alfred uncovered Bruce's journal in the cave. It showed some things that weren't true. Oracle had Black Canary raid Vesper Fairchild's safe-deposit box. Inside, they found some computer discs. The CDs showed that the files on Vesper's home computer had been doctored, and that she was not close to fingering Bruce as Batman (as the other files suggested). Oracle was completely convinced for the first time that there was a frame involved. Trying to clear her mentor, Batgirl dug up Fairchild's body. It was too decomposed to say if the fist-made bruises were inflicted by the fist she knew as Batman's. She did uncover signs of a nerve-strike, which would have enabled the killer to get her where he wanted her without the use of drugs, etc. Nightwing found three inconsistencies in the cave's computers, all corresponded with power outages. He then found a somewhat destroyed electronic device in one of the underground streams. He knew this did not belong there. Officer Dick Grayson stole some files on the murder from the Gotham City Police Department. Robin found a possibly doctored surveillance video from Wayne Manor. He and Nightwing fingered a possible entrance point to the cave in a nearby barn. Nightwing traced the cave and found more evidence before ending up standing behind Robin and Alfred in the Batcave. The Batsquad reenacted the crime. Nightwing and Batgirl deduced that the killer needed Vesper conscious to fake the 911 call. Dr. Thompkins sent Catwoman to find Batman for her. She told Bruce about a former GCPD detective on his deathbed asking to see Batman. He visited the man. He asked Batman to take on the only case that he was never able to close - the murders of Thomas and Martha Wayne. He'd promised their son he would catch the killer; he said he knew Bruce was innocent, and hoped this would bring him out of hiding. The situation struck deep inside Batman, who looked at the man's files and called Oracle.

Batman saved a junkie from a bad batch of heroin that had been killing people in Gotham City. He took the man to Dr. Leslie Thompkins. She tried to appeal to Bruce Wayne. Batman, on the trail of the heroin dealers, was confronted by a winged man who used to be named Ekin Tzu. The dealers/supplier saw the confrontation. Batman dispensed Tzu and the thugs quickly. Detectives Allen and Montoya questioned Alfred about Wayne. When Tzu attacked the heroin ring again, Batman was there. Tzu escaped with one of the dealers. Batman realized one of President Luthor's secret agencies, Checkmate was involved. His next sting led to Tzu's capture. The man that was named as having knowledge of the situation conveniently died before Batman could question him. Sasha Bordeaux's trial was quick: she was convicted, got to life, and began her sentence. Batman talked with Checkmate. Looking into a lead given to him by them, Batman was shot in the chest and fell from a building. Sasha was visited and tempted by a man claiming he could get her out if she fingered Wayne as the killer. At one of her weakest moments, Alfred visited her and gave her reassurance. Batman got closer to the group behind the bad heroin and realized there was more to it that was was on the surface. It was a front. He got to the man who hired the man who set Bruce Wayne up. The orders came directly from President Luthor, who'd been at odds with Wayne since No Man's Land. Nightwing met Batman at Vesper Fairchild's gravesite. Bruce apologized to him for the fight in the cave. The BatSquad convened. Batman took his mask off to the group; Bruce Wayne apologized to them. They went over what had happened. David Cain was sent to kill Sasha Bordeaux and make it look like a suicide. Nightwing and Robin tailed him, each took down an imposter. Cain attacked Oracle, knowing the hit that was called on him was a scam. Batman was there and took him down. Pride shattered, Cain confessed to the police that he'd killed Fairchild and framed Bruce Wayne.

Bruce Wayne was cleared of all charges after GCPD received a full confession from assassin David Cain for the murder of Vesper Fairchild. Wayne sent his attorneys to get Sasha Bordeaux's conviction overturned. After a fight on the workout grounds, Sasha refused to accept Bruce's help. She began having pains and collapsed in the prison cafeteria. Checkmate's agent Midnight was assigned to check out Bordeaux as a possible vigilante and associate of Batman. Alfred went to visit Sasha, but was told she'd died from injuries sustained in the fight (torn liver, internal bleeding). After telling Bruce that her family claimed the body, he refused to believe she was dead - she had no living relatives. He began a months-long investigation. Two weeks later, Sasha awakened in Checkmate's care. The organization that didn't exist offered her a job knowing she was a former bodyguard who could keep a secret. Batman realized Checkmate as a possible "who" in her disappearance and began checking into their movements. Within a six month span, he foiled seven of their missions. The organization confronted Sasha about Batman. She arranged a private meeting with him. Bruce met her (she'd had facial surgery to alter her appearance) in Robinson Park. He leveled with her and pleaded that she come back. She punched him, he kissed her, she left. Bruce began getting back into the swing of things at Wayne Enterprises. He met with some environmentalists and gave a dinner to some of his people (basic PR stuff). Later, he visited Lucious Fox in the hospital and had dinner with his family. That night, Batman went to work. With David Cain's trial approaching, Batman learned that Deadshot (another of Cain's former students) was out for the hit. While being transported from his cell to the trial, Deadshot struck. Batman got Cain to safety, but a few cops and guards were shot / injured in the process. GCPD received orders to shoot Cain on sight, thinking he was the cause of the ruckus. Batman blew through a wall leading them directly into a den of gun runners. Deadshot got to Cain in the shootout. Cain bested him, leaving him in desperate need of medical attention. Cain's trial was held that night and he was sentenced. Deadshot survived. Batgirl learned of someone codenamed "Alpha" that only Cain knew about. Oracle got her into Blackgate as a reporter to interview him. She couldn't contain herself. She jumped through the bullet-proof glass, threatening to his life if he killed again. Batman apologized to her and gave her a present marking her first birthday as Batgirl.

chapter one: Perception Batman arrived on the scene of an arms trade to find seven unconscious gangsters. The Wayne Enterprises Board asked Bruce to resign as president in lieu of his recent fugitive-from-justice status. Batman and Robin investigated a new vigilante being dubbed "the Tracker." He'd been hitting the Rossetti mob hard for two months. Batman finally got a confrontation with him, but the Tracker was called back and escaped. Another masked man, this one calling himself the Suicide King, offered his assistance to the Rossetti family for a cut of their profit. Bruce's main opposition at Wayne Enterprises was federally indicted; he offered her job to an old acquaintance of his mother's. Robin went after a man who was obsessed with Bruce Wayne. Tracker zapped Batman with enough volts to knock him out; Suicide King confronted the Tracker, they fought. Batman got up and went after them both. Suicide King escaped, and the Tracker fell from the rooftop avoiding Batman. Batman realized the dead man was working with Suicide King, not against him. Oracle notified Bruce that Tracker's body turned up missing from the morgue. His mother was the woman Bruce appointed to head Wayne Enterprises.

chapter two: Duplicity Celia Kazantkakis, Wayne Enterprise's new CEO and mother of the now deceased Tracker, went over known facts and allies of the Batman with her "network." They decided to start with the weakest link - Spoiler. They attempted to seduce her into their ranks. Spoiler met with one of their operatives and took the bait. She went after her prey, but was thwarted by Catwoman. Her second attempt wasn't in vain, but Catwoman (who'd been hired as the guy's bodyguard) didn't put up a fight against her when he bad-mouthed women. The man turned state's evidence against his former employers. chapter three: P.O.V. Orpheus, one of Gotham's newest vigilantes, witnessed a senator go berserk and die. When investigating the experimental hospital the senator had been treated at, Orpheus was attacked and drugged. Black Canary rescued him, and the hospital fell victim almost immediately to arson. chapter four: Identity Kazantkakis's Network watched Huntress. Suicide King was sent to contact her. Batman confronted her and asked her not to intervene with the Rossetti family. The Network uncovered her true identity and planned to use it against her. Helena bested Suicide King, but he escaped. She took off her mask when she realized she had no use in a secret identity - she had no friends or family that could be hurt by it.

chapter five: Interrogation The Network watched Robin save a mugging victim. He took the lady back to her apartment, where he questioned her about Sloan (the dead reporter who was obsessed with Bruce Wayne). She gave him a computer disc that she was told to give to "some reporter named Kent in Metropolis." Freeway, one of the Network's operatives, burst in on them. After a chase, Robin was captured. They let him escape; Freeway told him he knew of an American boy that trained under Shiva in Paris and fought Kingsnake (see Robin 1 miniseries). Robin went to a surgeon who owed him a favor; she removed a tracking device they'd implanted under his skin. Robin showed Batman Sloan's files. chapter six: Machinery The Batsquad went over known details of Sloan's credentials and the possibility of the "Network." The cops began looking for someone called the Technician, who orchestrated a huge mechanical monkey that served as a diversion for a armored car heist. Rumor was that he outfitted Gotham's biggest criminals with their toys. Batman met with his insider in the Rossetti family, an A.T.F. agent. He and the cops moved in on the Technician's hideout. Batman captured him. chapter seven: Precipice Batman interrogated on of Kazantkakis former associates while the rest of the team ran surveillance. The Network located the Technician by a similar tracking device that they'd implanted in Robin. An operative, Mr. Fun, was sent to retrieve and/or kill him. He ambushed Nightwing and Batgirl and killed the Technician while they were unconscious. chapter eight: Blackout The Batsquad was called in (even Orpheus, Black Canary, Spoiler, and Huntress). The Network shut off all power in Gotham City, while attempting to syphon $2 billion from Wayne Enterprises. Oracle battled the hacker and kept the money where it was. The rest of the team took down the Network's operatives. Athena (Kazantkakis) escaped, but her plan and operation were both smashed.

Batman went in to save a young kidnap victim, who's ransom ($10million) had already been paid. The kidnapper, Killer Croc, attacked. Batman realized that he could never have engineered a scheme of that sort, and that Croc appeared physically less human than ever before. Batman subdued him and got the boy to safety. The ransom was taken by Catwoman during their fight. Batman chased her, and fell from a great height when his rope failed. Catwoman delivered the $10million to Poison Ivy. Though massively injured from the fall, Batman radioed Oracle. She sent the closest operative, Huntress. Huntress fought off all the gatherers and got him into the Batmobile, which sped away under remote control. Oracle thought to contact Dr. Shondra Kinsolving, who'd once worked miracles on Bruce's broken body (see Knightfall, Knightquest), but Bruce requested Dr. Thomas Elliot, a childhood friend. Alfred faked a car wreck and got Bruce to the hospital. Wayne survived and was expected to make a full recovery. Batman went to Arkham to question Killer Croc. Croc escaped. The FBI gave Batman until midnight to catch him, or they would. Dr. Elliot came to Wayne Manor to visit Bruce, but he was, of course, out. As he left, Alfred remembered the night his father died, and Dr. Wayne was unable to save him. While after Croc, the Batmobile had a tire shot out. Batman still tracked Croc, who was about to attack Catwoman for stealing his money. After a fight, Croc was captured by the FBI. Catwoman thanked Batman for saving her, and for all the other times he'd saved her. She asked to be in on the Poison Ivy take-down. They kissed. Bruce Wayne and Dr. Thomas Elliot bumped into each other in Metropolis. Wayne visited one of his holdings, The Daily Planet. He spoke with Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Perry White. As Batman, he visited Talia Head, who was running LexCorp since Luthor had been elected President. Catwoman was his next meeting, as they prepared to strike Ivy. They teamed up on her, but she brought in her secret weapon - Superman - under her control. Batman grabbed Catwoman and they evaded Superman's attack into the lead-lined Metropolis sewer system. In the clear, they discussed the plan, kissed, and split up. Superman quickly found Batman, but he was prepared with his Kryptonite ring. A short fight and Batman got away from the stunned Man of Steel. On the street, before Superman could attack, Batman pointed up - Catwoman had dropped Lois Lane from a building. Superman was forced to save her. Superman defeated Ivy's hold on him, and they used Krypto the superdog to track her down and take her in. Bruce and Clark shook hands as the mysterious man in bandages watched.

Bruce Wayne joined Thomas Elliot, Leslie Thompkins, and Selina Kyle at an opera. Harley Quinn stopped the show to rob the patrons. She snatched a ring from Dr. Elliot that had been given to him by his mother; when he fought back, she and her gang began shooting. Batman soon appeared followed by Catwoman. Harley shot her, and Batman got her to Dr. Thompkins and chased Quinn. When he got outside, he found Elliot shot in the chest at Joker's feet. Batman, thinking of all the tragedies Joker had caused, chased down and began beating the Joker. Catwoman tried to stop Batman from killing him, but his rage turned on her. He rendered her unconscious. Thinking about Barbara, Jason, and Sarah, thinking what might happen someday to Selina, Batman went back to beating Joker. Jim Gordon fired two warning shots at Batman, reminding him what he'd become if he went through with it. Batman regained his sanity and stopped short of killing the Joker. The bandaged man who'd been watching recently flipped a coin. Bruce Wayne spoke at Thomas Elliot's funeral; Batman continued to investigate the murder. Bruce and Dick spoke in the cave - he realized Joker had not killed Tommy. Oracle informed them that Riddler had hijacked an armored car with $11 million onboard. While chasing him, Nightwing tried to convince Batman to tell Catwoman who he really was. They solved his riddle and easily captured him. Joker was visited in Arkham by the guy in bandages. He revealed himself as Harvey Dent - facial surgery had removed his scars. Batman took his mask off for Catwoman and invited into both of his lives. Batman hopped aboard a LexCorp flight and took Talia. Harvey Dent broke into James Gordon's home. The former Two-Face told the former commissioner that the gun which killed Thomas Elliot was his own service revolver. Lady Shiva found Catwoman, who was holding Talia while Batman was in Africa in search of her father. Batman defeated Ra's al Ghul in a sword duel; Ra's answered him cryptically - "Who in your life would wish to come back from the dead?" Shiva hurt Selina, but Talia saved her from being killed. Batman returned; Talia realized they were having a relationship and that his new attacker would also know that. Batman brought Catwoman into the cave for the first time. She watched as Alfred stitched up an injury on his back. She marveled at the amount of scarring he had and kissed him "to make it all better." Robin found Catwoman in the cave and attacked her. They fought until Batman stepped between them. He told his young partner that she was invited and he removed his mask. Blasting Bruce for making a wrong decision, Robin went after Catwoman again. She fought him off and warned him before leaving. With her gone from the cave, they wondered if she bought the act. After she left, Catwoman ran into Huntress. Huntress was obviously not herself and attacked Catwoman. She saw Catwoman as her old self. Batman and Robin showed up to watch the fight. Batman went into stop it, and Robin was attacked and called a "pretender" by the man who'd been watching Batman for months. Scarecrow arrived (Batman had realized he was behind Huntress's weirdness). Batman chased Scarecrow into a graveyard and unmasked him. While asking Crane who'd been using him, the bandaged man showed up with Robin. He removed his bandages to reveal himself as Jason Todd, Bruce's adopted son and second Robin who'd been dead for years. As the former Robin held his successor at knifepoint, Catwoman moved in and distracted him, getting Tim free. Batman attacked his dead partner. As they fought, Robin tried to keep Catwoman from intervening. Batman quickly realized that his opponent was not Jason Todd back from the dead - the man he fought was too quick, too acrobatic, too good. Though he had all the details of what had been happening in Batman's world the past few months, he never referred to the names Jason or Bruce. As the rain poured down and Batman took control of the battle, Robin dissolved - Clayface. Batman gave Robin (Tim) "Jason's" costume and sent him back to the cave to analyze it and get his cut neck treated. Catwoman went back to where Huntress had been, but she'd escaped. At the Clock Tower, Batman asked Oracle to track Huntress. She gave him the analysis from the device he'd found in the cave's computer. He met Harold, his former mechanic, on a bridge. Harold had been healed - he was no longer mute, no longer disfigured. Before Batman could get any answers from him, Harold was shot twice and killed by the bandaged man. With Harold dead, Batman turned to face the shooter - a man in a trench coat with bandages covering his face. During their fight, he revealed that he was Dr. Thomas Elliot. The bridge was the same bridge his parents crashed on. He wasn't mad that Dr. Wayne couldn't save his father - he was mad that he did save his mother. As a child, Elliot severed their break line in hopes that they would be killed. The Batmobile exploded - Hush had placed c4 on it while Batman spoke with Harold. As Hush readied to kill Batman, Jim Gordon called him down. Harvey Dent, healed by Elliot, shot the man and caused him to fall from the bridge. Batman went in after him, but could not find a body. Harvey told Batman and Gordon that he'd shot "Elliot" (actually Clayface) in the alley - to check the grave for residue of clay. Catwoman spoke with Huntress about the recent situation - it was Elliot who'd given Huntress the new costume and arsenal. In the cave, Batman spoke with Superman about how Elliot had healed Harvey and Harold. He revealed that the device Harold had placed in the computer had flashed images of Elliot subliminally so that he would be called when Batman was hurt. Superman also found no traces of Elliot's body in the harbor, but he did find an implant from Bruce's surgery. He burned it out. Batman questioned Riddler at Arkham. He admitted to infecting Croc and baiting him with the cure. Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, Joker, and Clayface were all pawns in the game Riddler and Elliot were playing. Ra's was in because he wanted Batman to find who'd used the Lazarus Pit (Riddler's cancer had been diagnosed as terminal, but had been cured by the pit). Riddler told him the whole story of "Hush" and called him Bruce, but "a riddle that everyone knows the answer to is worthless." Batman buried Harold and spoke with Catwoman. She told him to "hush" so she could kiss him, and he pushed her away.

Young Clark Kent pondered inviting a boy in a broken down car to play baseball with his friends. The boy was Bruce Wayne. Superman encountered Metallo, who was attacking S.T.A.R. Labs. After exposing his enemy to Kryptonite, Metallo fled. Superman went to Batman, who was tracking Metallo - John Corben. He robbed a grave and shot Superman with a Kryptonite shard. As Batman attended Superman, Metallo covered the grave they were in. President Lex Luthor was briefed on a large (the size of Brazil) asteroid on a collision course with Earth. It was a chunk of Krypton's remains. Batman set off a small charge below them; they fell into the sewer below. From there, he got Superman to the cave. Alfred removed the Kryptonite embedded in Superman's chest. Batman learned that John Corben could be the man who'd killed his parents. He and Superman were attacked by what appeared to be an aged Superman. Batman confirmed the time-traveler's identity; present Superman hit future Superman with the Kryptonite that he'd been shot with earlier. Future Superman disappeared. Missiles were fired at the asteroid, but did not affect it. Captain Atom asked President Luthor for permission to talk to Superman before his speech. Luthor declined and told the world about the asteroid. He blamed it on Superman and offered a $1billion reward for his capture. As Lois Lane interviewed Lex Luthor, Superman and Batman planned on crashing the event. Silver Banshee, Mr. Freeze, Captain Cold, Icicle, Killer Frost, Mongul, and Solomon Grundy attacked them. While taking down their attackers, the heroes realized they were being controlled. Nightshade and Lady Shiva also attacked. Gorilla Grodd was controlling them. Luthor abandoned the interview on an issue of national security. Captain Atom, Green Lantern, Starfire, Black Lightning, Major Force, Power Girl, and Kitana came in to take Superman in. Superman and Batman won their fight. Superman grabbed Power Girl and made for Tokyo, where Batman and Kitana (via Boom Tube) were waiting for them. The rest of the gang showed up and the fight continued. The JSA sent Hawkman and Captain Marvel (Shazam) in for Batman and Superman. Power Girl and Kitana went to find a boy genius as Superman and Batman were defeated. Krypto, Superboy, Supergirl, Steel, Nightwing, Robin, Huntress, and Batgirl infiltrated the White House after it was announced that Superman was in custody. Luthor gassed the BatSquad and captured Superman's family. After defeating Major Force, Captain Atom was thrust into the future, where he encountered the aged Superman that had been in the BatCave earlier. Batman and Superman (in disguise of Hawkman and Captain Marvel) rescued their friends from Luthor and headed back to Tokyo. Hiro Okamura, aka Toyman (the young Japanese genius) showed Superman and Batman his creation - a rocket designed to destroy the asteroid. Captain Atom returned from the future to pilot the ship. After launch, Luthor (in body armor forged in Apokolips) attacked Superman. Superman defeated Luthor, who fell to Batman. Batman informed him that Talia Head, his LexCorp CEO, had sold all his holdings to Bruce Wayne. Captain Atom sacrificed himself in the destruction of the asteroid; Earth was showered with Kryptonite. With Luthor gone (vanished), Batman told Superman to go into hiding while his people took care of the Kryptonite.

Ra's al Ghul arrived in Paris in 1923 and demanded to have the newborn child of a woman named Nyssa. She refused him and escaped with her son, Daniel. Chapter 1 Ra's al Ghul met with Nyssa. He told her about the Detective, about him destroying all his pits as soon as ground was broken on them. Nyssa voiced her approval of the Demon's Head's death. Two years later, Ra's sent one of his Ubu's to find Batman. Back in the cave, Ra's told Batman once more that he wished him to wed Talia and become his heir. He'd been estranged from his daughter and wished to have her back in his life before it was too late. Most of all, he wanted Batman to stop killing him. Chapter 2 Ra's offered Batman a potion that would allow him to speak to his parents in return for him not destroying the last Lazarus Pit. 18 months previous, he'd taken Nyssa's pit. Nyssa moved into the same building where Talia lived. They had dinner together. Alfred warned Bruce about contemplating Ra's al Ghul's offer - he was a threat to all humanity and the dead had earned their rest. While they were talking, Nyssa arrived at Wayne Manor asking to speak with Batman. Chapter 3 Alfred let Nyssa into Wayne Manor. She introduced herself to Bruce and told him she was also against Ra's al Ghul. Batman visited him and asked about the woman. Nyssa and Talia quickly became friends. Nyssa abducted her. When she awakened, Nyssa killed her and dumped her into a Lazarus Pit. Chapter 4 Nyssa remembered the circumstances that caused her to first use a Lazarus Pit as she continually killed Talia only to place her into a pit. Bruce took the potion given to him by Ra's and saw his mother. Chapter 5 Talia begged Nyssa to not harm her again, but she was killed once more and thrown again into the pit. Afterwards, Nyssa comforted her and promised to take care of her as a sister. Bruce's mother told him his father was angry with him and that she appeared as she did (with the gunshot wound) because that's how he remembered her. She led him through Gotham City, questioning why he'd not married. She found his father, Thomas. Chapter 6 Nyssa and Misha (her lover) continued their plan as Talia slept the day away. Bruce's father tormented him and he finally showed them what he'd made of his life - his costume. Alfred left Bruce's bedside when the cave was compromised a third time by Ra's (who'd actually only been two of those times). He demanded Batman give him the location of a Lazarus Pit. Nyssa told Talia they were sisters who shared the same father. Bruce's parents told him it was time to move on - they'd been dead 25 years. Chapter 7 After remembering her time served in a Nazi concentration camp in WWII, Nyssa left on a boat with Talia. Bruce found something missing from the cave and suited up. He went straight to Ra's, who demanded the location of the Lazarus Pit he'd been promised by their deal. After telling him, Batman learned that Nyssa had taken the Kryptonite from the cave. She wished to kill Superman so the entire planet would weep. Ra's left for the pit and was dipped inside it. Batman located Misha, who was ready to snipe the Man of Steel. Chapter 8 Superman, posing as Batman, stopped his would-be assassin. He got the information from him and fed it to Batman, who was already en route to the Lazarus Pit. As Ra's al Ghul's daughters entered his tent, Batman parachuted toward them. He was held back by the tribe of Ubu as Talia went at him with a sword. Ra's stabbed her through the stomach. As Batman tended her, Ra's named Nyssa his heir and handed her his sword. She stuck it through him. Chapter 9 Ra's al Ghul died, leaving Nyssa to carry on his legacy. She had Batman detained and dropped into the desert with her father. The Detective burned the man's dead body. Back in Gotham City, Batman verified the identities of both Ra's and Talia. Batman eventually caught up with Nyssa and questioned her. She answered just as her father would have. Talia entered with a gun to Batman's head. She pledged loyalty to Nyssa, the Demon's Head. Nyssa told him her father's last words - "take care of your sister, Nyssa...care for her the way I never could." Batman returned home after making new enemies.

Batman strung Killer Croc up on hopes of getting some information on a girl (Elizabeth Lupo) that had been found found dead. Though he believed Croc was hired to kill her, Batman couldn't yet prove anything. Believing Elizabeth's brother Angel, a mobbed up used / stolen car dealer, had her killed, he went looking for him. Batman found the location of the man by following his girlfriend, Margo Farr. As he chased off a man trying to attack her, Angel escaped. A mother and father were killed - their son, the only witness, was left alive. Batman called Crispin Allen about the murders and told him to question Farr both about them, and Elizabeth Lupo. After hearing back from Allen (who'd gotten nothing), Batman questioned Killer Croc again, this time about where Angel Lupo might be. He got a name - Jonny Billy. Batman went for him and was taken down by an unseen assailant. Batman awakened and got himself to one of Bruce Wayne's safe houses. Jonny Billy was dead - beaten to death. Batman went to Penguin, who squealed about a tandem calling themselves Fat Man and Little Boy. They wanted business in Gotham City. He also said Scarface was interested in information. Batman caught up with Margo Farr again. Again she said she didn't know where Angel was, and again, he saved her from an attack. Batman went to Scarface and made it be known he wanted Angel Lupo. In the Little Tokyo district of Gotham City, Batman encountered Fat Man (a behemoth of a man) and Little Boy (a very quick female martial artist). They told him Angel was not a killer, and they'd find him before he did. Detective Allen informed Batman that Elizabeth Lupo was pregnant when she was killed. He went after Croc again, and was shot at by Margo Farr. He realized Lupo was running not because he killed his sister, but that he thought he'd be next. Margo knew Elizabeth had been pregnant. She had her killed to protect her from her over-protective brother. He would have gone after the man she'd been dating (she was unmarried) and would have killed him. Penguin pointed Batman in Lupo's direction. He had set up a meeting with Fat Man and Little Boy. Batman took down Fat Man and Little Boy, then waited for Lupo to arrive. When he did, he didn't know what to do. Lupo ran, then was shot. Batman witnessed Arnold Wesker break down and defeat Scarface. He felt more at peace since the girl he loved could now rest in peace. Wesker also thought Lupo had killed his sister. He was taken into police custody. Detective Allen told Batman someone at Arkham Asylum wanted to talk to him. Joker toyed with Batman, knowing everything that had gone on in the case. After thinking back on his own parents, Batman went for the killer of the little boy's parents - the little boy.

Batman went after a mob hitman who appeared to be high on some hallucinogenic drug. The man evaded Batman and fell from the window of a high-rise building. Robin was sent into the morgue incognito for investigation. Another man freaked out after being hit up for "protection" money. After a fight with Batman, he died of heart failure. The mobsters returned to their boss - Oswald Cobblepot. His apparent partner, Scarecrow, informed them they gave the two men concentrated doses of the fear toxin. Batman saved Eddie "The Buck" Buccelli from being tortured at the hands of his fellow mobsters. Cobblepot reminded Scarecrow who was boss and ordered him out of his costume. Crane and his associate, Linda Friitawa (who had the hots for him), continued working on their project. Batman threatened Cobblepot: stop what ever it is you're doing - I'm watching. Scarecrow, vowing to earn Penguin's respect, attacked a rival mob. Jimmy Lemongelo, a small time mobster, killed three other 'made' men. He was attacked by what appeared to be a beast-like Scarecrow. With 18 dead at one scene and thirteen at another, Batman believed the killer to be around 14 feet tall. He and Robin found hidden security footage at the second scene. Batman told Robin to go off with the Titans while he took care of things in Gotham City. Penguin talked to Crane about the Scare-beast. Crane insisted he had nothing to do with it. The Scare-beast attacked a meeting between Cobblepot and some of his 'employees.' Batman was there for it. As they fought, it dosed him with fear gas. Batman, though prepared for the fear gas, was infected. He was able to escape by jumping through a window and calling the Batmobile to him. Though Alfred tried to calm him, Batman saw Joker in his passenger seat. Alfred got worried and called Robin in to help Batman. Two-Face appeared to him in the car. As Tim neared the car, Batman saw him as Jason / Hush. He was able to hang on as the car got back to the cave. Batman was knocked unconscious and Alfred dosed him. Nine hours later, Bruce awakened. The Scarebeast was attacking Wayne Manor. The Scarebeast attacked Wayne Manor. Alfred, while being carried by the beast was able to stab it in the eye. Robin got Alfred to safety and attacked it while it went for Bruce. They were able to get the beast into the cave where Bruce got into an armored batsuit. Alfred hit it with tranquilizers until it shrunk into Jonathan Crane. Batman confronted Penguin about his role in transforming Crane so that he would murder unloyal underlings. Linda Friitawa, Crane's assistant, was also in on it. She escaped, calling herself Fright. Crane transformed into the beast once again while being transported and escaped. Alfred found a green eye mask in the Batmobile.

After a S.T.A.R. Labs transport was hijacked, Batman and Robin split up, each taking one of the get-away vehicles. Together, they recovered 8 of the 9 stolen items. Batman had Oracle start on the last. Batman sent Tim home so he could get a good night's sleep before his first day of 11th grade the next day. The remaining at-large thief returned home to find his girlfriend tied up. One of his boss's enforcers, Johnny Warren, was there. Robin got a line on him and went to investigate. He found the man dead and let his guard slip. Warren captured him. Robin got out of Johnny Warren's grasp and roughed him up. In the fight, Johnny accidentally shot his own left hand off. He shot the hostage and escaped with the S.T.A.R. Labs loot while Robin tended the injured girl. Robin, feeling he could have done more if he could have gotten there faster, asked Batman for his own transportation. He returned home and told his father he'd been roughed up trying out for the football team. Johnny Warren, after being patched up by his mother, opened the loot and was attacked by it. Batman gave Robin a motorcycle. Johnny Warren, being driven by the parasitic entity he'd let loose, surfaced and killed two police officers. He then attacked his old gang's hideout and informed them he was the new boss. Robin found Warren's mother, dead and decayed. Spoiler found the two cops in the same condition. Robin and Spoiler went after Warren. He attacked them and burned out. One punch from Robin tore him into pieces. He resurfaced weeks later in Istanbul under the name Johnny Warlock. At an open house at Tim's school, Jack Drake found out he'd not tried out for the football team. Wondering what else his son was hiding from him, he searched his room. Batman continued to work hard with Robin, who was still apprehensive about having 'killed' Johnny Warren. Batman told him he could use that excuse one more time - when he quit. Tim again spoke with Stephanie about quitting the life. She beat him up about it and reminded him of all the good he'd done. Jack Drake found Robin's outfit and journal. He went to Wayne Manor and threatened Bruce at gunpoint. Bruce disarmed Jack Drake. Drake accused him of using mind control over his son. He threatened to tell everyone - the media, the police, the world - Wayne's secret. Robin returned to the cave to find Bruce and his father. Jack ordered Tim to get out of his costume and to go home with him. Nightwing arrived as Tim and his father talked; Bruce got into costume. Alfred suggested killing the Drakes so that the secrets wouldn't be exposed. The humor broke the ice a bit. Jack agreed not to expose anyone, and Tim agreed to no longer be Robin. In Istanbul, Johnny Warlock hired a hitwoman to take Robin down. She planned to unearth his secret identity. He called his former boss in Gotham an ordered him to create chaos in order to bring Robin out of hiding (he'd not been seen lately).

A new designer drug called G.H.D. claimed its sixteenth victim. Batman questioned a friend of the victim and got the name of the dealer. He didn't know who supplied him, so Batman and Batgirl gave him a few thrills. Batgirl questioned his motives, mentioning that he seemed to be taking this more personally than normal. The next night, he ignored a transmission for Oracle. He took down the manufacturer of the drug by offering him a choice: handcuffs or his own drug. He chose the cuffs. Later that night, Bruce took Cassandra to Jason's grave. It would have been his 18th birthday. Batman began trailing Jamil Heyman, a former pro football player who was now into gangbanging. After taking him and his gang down after a gun deal, Oracle notified him that Leslie called for him. A young woman had come into her clinic, apparently shot - with no bullet. She and her unborn child were in bad shape. Batman arrived; she asked him to find the girl's family. He took her prints and found out she was an orphan. At her last known address, one of her foster sisters gave Batman a picture of the girl and her real sister. Batman realized Mr. Freeze was somehow involved - he found only water where he'd been shot earlier. After paying another visit to Heyman, Batman returned to Leslie's clinic to find it abandoned. Batman found two of the clinic workers drugged and tied up in a closet. After questioning them, he realized the pregnant girl's sister was a famous pop star. While tracking them down, Batman listened in on the bug he planted on Heyman. Mr. Freeze called him. As Batman arrived at the location where the girl and Leslie were being held, Heyman attacked with some of Freeze's weaponry. Batman, Leslie, the mother, and the singer were trapped in the collapsed building. Dr. Thompkins was able to save the baby, but the mother died in the operation. Batman cleared enough of the rubble for the grandmother (the singer was actually the mother's mother) to get out. They told her to get the child to a hospital immediately. Media reported her manager and husband (Heyman) dead. Batman tracked down Freeze and stopped him. Later, Leslie visited Bruce at the Manor. Capo Siegel was buried in Gotham City. Matches Malone purchased information from his widow. Batman and Orpheus made a move against the mobsters who were now without a boss. When a load of illegal immigrants arrived in Bludhaven all dead, the ship's captain set fire the his boat. After hearing the truth, Catalina Flores (Tarantula) vowed to find out more. Tarantula got a name and went after the man believed to be behind the shipment of Santa Priscans. He told her they were dead and rotting after only five days at sea. She found a man made of roaches later that night and set him on fire. Rotted corpses began popping up in Gotham City. Batman told Commissioner Akins to stay out of the Hill (where the bodies were found). He and Tarantula bumped into each other that night investigating. Batman encountered Tarantula, who was hell-bent on burning things that could be contaminated with the Mugre. He didn't believe her at first, but saw some intangible liquid take form. He welded himself and Tarantula in with it so that no one else could be exposed. They got out via the sewer; Batman sent Flores home and told her not to come in contact with anyone else until he got in touch with her. He researched those known dead and the bacterium that caused their deaths. He realized that thingyroaches were the stop for it and created an antidote. After finding Tarantula in the sewer where he last saw her, he dosed her and ordered her to leave his town. He delivered the info and antidote to Akins. Orpheus found the city sanitation chief dead of a self-inflicted gunshot. He told Batman.

Green Arrow arrived at a monastery in the mountains and met with a woman he knew named Onyx. He needed a favor for a "friend." Orpheus's gang got shot at in an arms deal. Back in Gotham City during the shootout, Batman introduced Orpheus to his new bodyguard - Onyx. After she helped them take down the dealers, they dumped the guns in the bay. As Penguin welcomed Orpheus and Onyx into the Iceberg Lounge, Batman and Batgirl arrived. A fight broke out, convincingly enough to make everyone believe the Bats were against Orpheus and Onyx. Tim and Stephanie talked. He was adjusting; she intended to continue on as Spoiler. Warlock's assassin reported back to him - Robin had not been sighted in six weeks, though Batman, Nightwing, and Batgirl had; Robin's true identity had been narrowed down to 12 candidates. While Spoiler checked in on her boyfriend, she found him lip-locked with another girl. Pissed, she created her own Robin outfit and broke into the cave. Batman gave her the job - he told Alfred that Tim quit and no longer played a part in his plans. Stephanie could be suitable under his protection, but not alone (as with her Spoiler identity). He gave her a real outfit and made her get a haircut. Her training began. They went out on patrol as Tim made a date with the girl who'd kissed him (Stephanie had not been returning his calls). The first Robin candidate and his family were killed. After taking down some muggers, Batman took Stephanie / Robin to investigate a murder scene. Batman quickly realized it was the work of Zsasz. Batman sent Robin home, but Zsasz got to her before she could get clear. Robin was resourceful enough to get away long enough for Batman to get to Zsasz. Together they were able to stop him and get him to the police. Afterwards, Batman got on to her for resorting to deadly force in the battle. Together they were able to stop him and get him to the police. Afterwards, Batman got on to her for resorting to deadly force in the battle. Stephanie, as Robin, went out with Batman on her 46th night in her new costume. They took down "Bloodbath, Inc." and got the name of their boss. Tim continued to get the cold shoulder from his girlfriend. The seventh possible Robin and his family were killed by Warlock's assassin. The next night, Batman and Robin took down a woman calling herself Tiger Moth. Tim began to hear rumors of a new sidekick. He called the cave - Stephanie answered. Batman put some things together and uncovered the plot to kill the last Robin. Though Stephanie stood him up, Batgirl gave Tim a visit. Scarab went after her eighth victim, but was interrupted by Batman and Robin. Day 48 as Robin saw Scarab attack her and Batman. She got them separated and was miffed that Robin was a girl. Scarab removed her mask anyway, took pictures, and left. They regrouped back in the cave - Robin had placed a tracker on Scarab. Scarab contacted her employer believing she'd already killed her target, which had led to the new Robin. Batman got to her; Robin disobeyed orders and went in to help. Scarab captured Robin and left in the batplane. Alfred recovered it and Stephanie the next day while Bruce recovered from his temporary blinding due to the battle. Three weeks later, Batman called Stephanie in and fired her for disobeying a direct order. He also told her he didn't expect to ever see Spoiler again, either. Tim and Batgirl talked. She admitted she was assigned to guard him because of the Scarab situation.
