A 7.6 earthquake shook Gotham. Wayne Manor, the Batcave, and all of the city were destroyed. Nightwing borrowed a boat and set out for his old home. There, he began rescuing survivors. Barbara Gordon rushed to police headquarters and began rallying the troops for rescue missions. Azrael was transporting the captive Bane to police when the quake hit. Bane was temporarily loosed, but Azrael captured him. Batman rescued Alfred and swam to find a way out of the cave. Huntress was on the subway when the quake hit, she began getting all the passengers to safety. Bruce surfaced in Gotham Harbor to see his city in flames. Catwoman survived the quake - she was in a department store doing recon for a future job. She got the few survivors she could find to safety. Tim Drake's plane home from Europe was diverted to Bludhaven due to the Quake. Blackgate was devastated. During the quake, a land-bridge opened between the island and Gotham itself. Close to 300 either escaped or died (trying to escape or rioting). An aftershock took the bridge down. Batman made it back to Gotham and began rescuing victims. Tim Drake's plane landed in Bludhaven; after hearing about the quake, he stole a motorcycle and headed for Gotham. Two-Face and Penguin were known to be free men. A noted seismologist was kidnapped, and a man calling himself the Quakemaster threatened Gotham with more devastation if not paid $100million. Nightwing and Robin both find Oracle, only to learn that no one has heard from Batman. Dick and Tim go to the cave. Alfred and Harold confess that they haven't seen him in possibly days. Stephanie Brown was in the mall when it hit, and she slipped quickly into her costume (the Spoiler) to try and help out. Some of the Blackgate escapees (including her father - the Cluemaster) showed up and began looting. Huntress made it out of the subway into the mall and gave her sister vigilante a hand. They took down all the mooks except for Brown, which Spoiler let escape. Catwoman was looking for looters when she came upon Poison Ivy. Ivy was trying to get some mutant seeds and massive fertilizers into Gotham's water supply, but Catwoman was able to take her down. Arkham Asylum was for the most part left unscathed. Some of the inmates drove a new guard insane, but it appeared that no one escaped. Batman began trying to track down Jolene Relazzo, only to find that she'd been abducted by the phony "Quakemaster." Robin figured out that the Quakemaster was the Ventriloquist by his phrasing and set out to find him. When he arrived, Bullock, Montoya, and Bock were already there. They took him down pretty easily. Batman, Nightwing, and Robin surveyed the former Gotham skyline.

In the week after the quake, Batman had to take down both Mr. Freeze and Ultimate Clayface. Batman and Robin continued rescuing people and helping them find each other. Tim checked on his girlfriend (Ariana) and accidentally met up with Robin's (Spoiler). He got Stephanie's costume back from her father, who was in his own costume - as the Cluemaster. Batman and Robin rescued citizens trapped in a subway car, and captured the Ratcatcher in the meantime. Dick, Alfred, and Tim continued working on the cave and Wayne Manor, as Master Bruce did some cleaning up in town. He took care of some break-ins in a bank, along with rescuing a man from a collapsing building. Later, Bruce took a walk with his girlfriend, Vesper Fairchild. Batman came upon a high-society birthday party, but two of the members (including the guest of honor) had been cannibalized during their 14 day entrapment. Bruce renewed his promise to his parents and asked that they forgive him of his failures. A cop-turned-bounty hunter now named Ballistic returned to Gotham on a commission. He teamed with Batman again (the first time was during KnightQuest, when Batman was Jean-Paul Valley) to uncover some pure dope. He destroyed it and left town. Batman's next task was stopping some looters and saving a teacher who'd been trapped in his classroom full of dead students for two weeks. The teacher went mad and tried to kill Batman. Batman (to Alfred) and Bruce (to Vesper) both broke down. Batman spoke with Gordon and they sought hope. As businesses threatened to leave Gotham, Bruce Wayne vowed to stay and finance anyone who wanted to get a new business started. Narcosis showed up in Gotham and began showing everyone he touched "bliss." Jervis Tetch/the Mad Hatter is also on the loose. While "the master" was out, Alfred saved the manor from looters. Huntress saved some of her school children from being cannibalized. Batman was able to save a little girl hostage because the Joker, while still in Arkham, told him where she was. Batman and Robin helped out Montoya and Bullock when a street gang attempted to siege a hospital for it's drug stores. As many Gothamites bailed their failed city, a bridge collapsed. Batman took down the Mad Hatter, who accidentally killed Narcosis, and stopped their blissful plan.

Batman asked Azrael to go to Washington to protect a senator, but he was killed by Nick Scratch, a rock star with political influence. Azrael was pinned for the murder, and he was fired by Batman (who told him to burn the costume). With staffing being less and less daily due to the exodus from Gotham, Arkham Asylum's pressure increased. Joker got to the medication database and altered it to the worst possible dosages. The inmates took over the asylum. Bruce Wayne traveled to Washington DC to make an attempt to save Gotham by speaking to the House and Senate. Firefly and Nick Scratch's minions attacked Gotham, which was being guarded by Nightwing and Robin in Batman's absence. Gordon interviewed for some out-of-town jobs, but was mostly laughed at. After Wayne spoke, an assassin's bullet missed him instead killing Gotham's mayor Marion Grange. The vote was taken, and Gotham was to be secluded from the rest of the nation. Gothamites were given 48 hours to leave. Dr. Arkham finally gave in - he was out of food and medication for the inmates, so he let everyone free hoping they'd get into Gotham and be trapped there when the bridges were blown.

Bruce Wayne had been Bruce Wayne for too long. After disappearing during the DC hearings on Gotham, he ended up in Monaco, France, Rio, etc. He let himself get beaten up and was rescued by Talia. She reminded him of who he was, and he returned home. When there, he found that Gotham had not been without a Bat - Huntress had become Batgirl. He watched her quietly from afar. Three months into No Man's Land, Oracle continued her chronicle of the situation. It'd been three months since she, Nightwing, or Robin had seen or heard from Batman. Rival gangs (and the GCPD) marked their territory by "tagging' or spray painting their logos on walls; Oracle heard from one of her operatives that they'd seen a bat tag. Gordon got the idea to incite rival gangs to fight each other so that the GCPD could take their territory easier due to the decreased number of their enemies. The Bat's territory also began growing. GCPD (the "Blueboys") took over the territories (all the way to police headquarters) ruled by the LoBoys and Demonz after their war. Batman contacted Oracle and made his presence known. He confronted the Huntress (as Batgirl) and let her know she wasn't approved, just not disapproved. Batman took the Ventriloquist's territory and he let everyone see him in the day time so word would spread. A priest started a relief project, but allowed Scarecrow into it. Huntress had a problem with that. Gordon worried about the Ark Project. Batman stalked Black Mask's gang. Scarecrow began playing devil's advocate with Father Christian and the refugees. Father Chris' deal with Penguin backfired when Scarecrow told the Black Mask gang and the refugees that there were guns inside the mission. There was a shootout between Penguin's men and the Black Maskers, but Batman and Huntress drove them all off. The mission dumped their weaponry into the lake. Scarecrow ran away.

Batman crashed Penguin's party and turned all his patrons against him. Gordon struck a deal with an unknown party, and rival gangs began tasting defeat. The GCPD was thought to be the victors. The False-Face Society (followers of Black Mask) were on the move. Batman asked Huntress/Batgirl to keep them from the police HQ and not be seen. She assailed them visibly and took down Black Mask himself in front of his minions. Batman took him to Blackgate, where Lock-up was in control of the island. Barbara confronted Batman about the new girl in her costume. Alfred continued to serve at Leslie Thompkins' clinic. Superman showed up to take things into his own hands. Batman warned him that he couldn't do anything and gave him 24 hours. When he couldn't just make everything right, Superman left. Penguin learned that someone had an outside source for food - he found some cases of canned goods that were dated after NML. Two-Face and Penguin struck a deal to take down both the Bat and the GCPD. Two-Face two-faced Penguin and took his land as well. Batman suffered the most loss.

Batman lost trust in Batgirl (Huntress). One of Oracle's operatives saved the Commissioner from a bullet - David Cain was the assassin, and the girl (who couldn't speak) claimed to be his daughter. Batman took her aside and together they both understood that the other had been trained by Cain. He told her that Cain was his problem, not hers (since he'd been hired by Two-Face). She took out Two-Face while Batman confronted Cain. She brought her father his commission, and for Batman she had Two-Face's coin. Batman told Oracle to call all his people. He took Nightwing with him to confront Huntress. He asked her to step in line or step away. At the assemblage, Batman took Robin with him, while Nightwing set off for Blackgate. Azrael and Batgirl (Cain's daughter) went after Nicholas Scratch. Batman and Robin set out to look for Poison Ivy. Clayface had her and her helpers captive and were using her fruits as a way to pad his bank account. Petit and Foley left Gordon's crew and formed their own bunch. Petit somehow had a stockpile of ammo, and Huntress attacked. Batman and Ivy together went up against Clayface. Together (with Robin's help), they destroyed Clayface - Ivy used him as potting soil. Batman made a deal with her - he'd leave her alone in the park if she'd grow fruits and vegetables for Gotham; he'd be in charge of distribution. Two-Face captured Montoya. Victor Fries was taking advantage of the power station that Superman left him in charge of; Batman came in and destroyed it, leaving Fries bound inside. A priest called for Batman with a home-made signal and told him of the man who'd been showing them how to make fresh water, etc. He was missing. Batman tracked him down and saved him from Killer Croc. Batgirl succeeded on her first assignment - Batman had her score some gasoline for a hospital generator. Bane returned to Gotham. Batman and Lynx teamed up to help some enslaved people revolt. Joker and Harley found an apartment building that had survived and was intact above the 27th floor. They began trading the goods out. Huntress detonated Joker's bombs and the clown duo went back into hiding.

Dr. Thompkins' clinic was brought to a pressure point when Huntress, Pettit, Batman, Croc, and Zsasz all came together there. Zsasz was captured, and Killer Croc fled. Detective Bock fought to get medical supplies for Gothamites; he made a deal with Penguin to fight one of his gladiators. Bock won and his sick got passage to Bludhaven. Bane set out to destroy the Hall of Records, while attempting to set all rival gangs against Two-Face's men. He succeeded in destroying the Hall of Records while Batman and Robin saved Harvey Dent from the hangman's noose. Nightwing and Robin took out some long dead gangsters who'd come back to life during some sort of supernatural happening. Batman took down a man who was selling people safe passage form Gotham - his safe passage was to a dungeon. Clark Kent visited Gotham. When questioned by Batman, he said he was checking up on a bio-terrorist group. Two-Face made a move on the Blue Boys and captured Gordon. He put the commissioner on trial, but Harvey Dent got Gordon acquitted. The BatSquad saved Gordon's people in his absence. Gordon and Batman made up. Bruce took his mask off in a gesture of trust, but James refused to look at him. The two old friends planned an attack on the Joker. As the federal government debated the NML, Lex Luthor showed up to "rebuild" Gotham.

Lex Luthor began hiring everyone in NML that would work. Batman visited him and reminded him that it was his city. Joker plotted to get back into the spotlight. He destroyed one Luthor camp each night for the next eight nights until Bane was sent to stop him. Batman confronted Bane and told him to leave town. Wayne Enterprises was on top of it when the NML was to be lifted. The federal government gave Gotham until New Year's Day to make a difference. If one was made, the NML would be lifted. Joker made his move on Pettit's team. With the former cop's help, he killed everyone in the camp. Only the Huntress stood in his way. She took three bullets from him before Nightwing rescued her and got her to Dr. Thompkins' clinic. Joker kidnapped infants all over NML and planted bombs in dolls he'd stolen from a LexCorp Christmas gala. He gathered all the real babies at GCPD Headquarters where Lt. Essen-Gordon tried to stop him. Joker shot her dead. Commissioner Gordon lost control and shot the Joker after he'd surrendered. Joker thought it was funny that Gordon would shoot him in the knee - he might be unable to walk afterwards - just like Gordon's daughter, Barbara. Lucious Fox, Wayne Enterprises CEO, and Batman took down Luthor and his land stealing scheme. Batman and Gordon both spent New Years at grave sites of loved ones.

A senator was assassinated at a public speaking event in Gotham. Batman was videotaped apprehending the shooter. National outcry facilitated an anti-vigilante task force to be created after the vigilantes failed to surrender. Using high-tech experimental helicopters and other state-of-the-art technologies, Batman, Robin, Huntress, Nightwing, and Catwoman all suffered attacks in the first night. Gordon was strong-armed into cooperating. After receiving complimentary intelligence from the Bloodhawks, Gordon turned the information over to the BatSquad. With the data and surveillance A-V from Catwoman, Oracle was able to piece together that the Bloodhawks were creating terrorism to justify their own existence. Batman traveled to Central America to follow up on one of the Bloodhawks' previous missions. He uploaded a dictators files to Oracle and stole a picture of him with the Bloodhawk leader. Catwoman infiltrated their camp and made off with a chopper and other goodies. She handed them off to the BatSquad. Oracle got info to Gordon - the GCPD and BatSquad went after the Bloodhawks and took them down.

In the three months since NML, gangs/mafia made their attempts at taking over the city. Ra's al Ghul sent two of his operatives to Gotham. Batman soon met up with them: Whisper A'Daire as Bruce at a gala, and Kyle Abbot as Batman at a bombing. Whisper reported back to the Demon that her incited gang wars were escalating as planned. Bruce found out that Whisper and Abbot were "serving" Ra's, and that they weren't completely human. Whisper was part cobra; Abbot a werewolf. Gang rivalries continued to heat up as Whisper took one gang's leader and initiated him by transforming him into a raven. Batman and Gordon were on to A'daire; Batman was able to take her down (with the help of the raven who saw him as an angel) before the transformation/longevity drug could go mainstream. Harvey Dent asked Bruce to send Detective Montoya flowers on her birthday. She visited him in Arkham after finding out. Batman thanked her for giving Harvey peace. Tension continued to mount between the OG's (original Gothamites) and DeeZees (NML deserters). Several bombings occurred at OG building sites; Gordon took down the builders for sabotage and insurance fraud. Ra's al Ghul sent Abbot and A'daire to fetch his daughter, Talia. Batman was close on their trail and used Whisper's addiction as a weapon to get the Demon's location. Batman put him on the run again, but Talia stayed neutral - she left with neither her father nor her beloved.

While on his way to Barbara's after a birthday party thrown for him by his team, Commissioner James Gordon was shot three times in the back. Catwoman was the only witness. The BatSquad showed up for Oracle immediately except for Batman himself. They found him in Gordon's room shortly after the first surgery was over. He sent his team out to find Catwoman while he stayed with his friend. They got a lead on her from Harley Quinn and shortly captured her. She claimed a cop shot him and that she had the gun stashed away. Nightwing took the gun to Oracle. She was able to trace it back to its original owner, to the cops who took the owner down. She then traced one of the cops to his previous life as a mobster taken down by Gordon while still in Chicago. Alfred got fed up with Bruce not doing anything (he'd stood by Gordon's side and not left at all), and he quit the Wayne employ. As Gordon was waking up, Nightwing got the gun and info to Bullock, who brought in the dirty cop. They grilled him, but couldn't get a confession; Gordon didn't see him and therefore couldn't ID him. Rich (formerly Reynolds) walked. Batman scared him as soon as he walked out of the police station, but fled. Gordon was released from the hospital, and he retired from the force. Michael Akins was named his successor, but Batman didn't take it well. He told Gordon that he felt like he'd failed him, his wife, and his daughter. Bullock kept Montoya from murdering Rich.

Batman investigated a series of police shootings. Robin saw a caped figure on a rooftop that wasn't a member of the team. Minority groups began pointing racist fingers at the cops due to recent gang violence. A new player in the mob scene was making his name known: Rasputin. Police burst in on a drug lab to find a new "mask." He escaped; Batman questioned one of the dopers involved, the masked man called himself "Orpheus." Batman went to Rasputin and told him to leave Gotham City. Orpheus attacked a street gang, Batman tracked him. He and Orpheus had a quick but heated discussion over the body of the sixth cop shooting. Orpheus felt only a black hero could be a hero to blacks. It appeared that the cop shootings were somehow related to No Man's Land - all the victims were stationed at a certain area of the city during that time. Batman and Orpheus fought when the new hero refused to leave Batman's city. He was easily defeated, but showed strong will. Remembering what Commissioner Akins told him about not having to live under the badge, Batman called Dick Grayson. He met with Orpheus and showed him an ammo storehouse. They were ambushed. After escaping, they went to the scene of a riot, which had broken out between gangs, cops, and civilians. Robin, Batgirl, and Black Canary soon arrived to help out. Orpheus caught the cops behind it all in the act, he transmitted images and sounds to Batman. Batman had them played for everyone on the scene.

[1] Nightwing convinced Oracle to take the day off and go for a drive with him. At the Slab, doctors discovered a terminal growth in the Joker's brain. Joker later met another inmate with shape-shifting abilities. He convinced Chiller to take his form and go back to his cell. Shilo Norman, head of security at the Slab) warned the administrators not to put Joker in contact with the rest of the population. Joker was told about his condition. [2] Two agents interviewed surviving Joker victims. They got a call about the riot which had begun at the slab. Batman had been watching them and overheard. [3] Mister Mind - an alien worm - got himself into the brain of a college student, only to be taken down by Mary Marvel and put in the Slab.
After being diagnosed with a fatal brain tumor, Joker started a riot at his new home, the Slab. Barbara and Dick enjoyed some off-time together. Black Canary heard about the riot. She and Blue Beetle went in to try and stop it. The slab was gassed, but Joker had anticipated that move. He'd altered the gas, making it a variant of his gas - all the inmates became pseudo-Jokers. Canary was caught by an inmate.
Nightwing arrived at the Slab with Batman already on the scene. Shilo and Dina made toward the Slab via undersea tunnel. Batman met up with Nightwing and gave him the lowdown. They recovered Black Canary. Joker and some of the other prisoners arrived mainland. Batman, Nightwing, and Black Canary were picked up by Blue Beetle as the Slab imploded. They escaped the gravity well created by Black Mass - a Jokerized inmate. Canary regained consciousness and told them Joker was dying.
The JLA returned from off-world; Batman and Nightwing searched for Joker. President Luthor was briefed on the situation and declared a national emergency. Harley Quinn got in touch with Oracle for help - Joker's goons were after her: Joker wanted an heir. Oracle sent Batgirl and Spoiler. Power Girl arrived and helped them out. She delivered Quinn to S.T.A.R. Labs, where Dr. Kirk Langstrom was working on an antiserum for the Joker gas. Oracle hoped that Joker would be killed.

Dr. Langstrom contacted Batman - his antiserum was having adverse affects. The military and "costumed citizens" continued to fight against Joker's forces, but made little progress. Harley Quinn was able to help Langstrom perfect the antiserum - she'd had some experience with it. The doctor who diagnosed Joker as terminal admitted to Black Canary that he'd altered the results - Joker was fine. Joker began to unleash his gas into storm clouds.
Huntress was attacked by Jokerized Ventriloquist and Scarface. After hitting Wesker with the antiserum, Oracle sent her after Robin (he'd been captured in Arkham). Batman, Plastic Man, and Martian Manhunter continued the search for Joker. Via warp, Joker got to Nightwing and gave his list of demands. When Huntress got into Arkham, she realized it was completely Jokerized. She found Killer Croc and skeletal remains near Robin's torn costume.
Joker learned that Croc had eaten Robin and was most pleased, even though he didn't get to kill the Boy Wonder. Oracle told Nightwing, who rushed to the cathedral where Joker was holed up. The Slab's security team was able to get it back into real space, but it arrived in Antarctica. Nightwing killed the Joker before Robin could arrive and stop him. The Batsquad resuscitated Joker and got him back to the Slab. The rest of the Jokerized super criminals were dealt with - either dead from the poison or cured.

Batman and Sasha Bordeaux (Bruce's bodyguard who'd found out he was Batman) went out on patrol. They stopped a bank robbery and split up. When she arrived back at Wayne Manor, she found Bruce standing above the dead body of his girlfriend, Vesper Fairchild. The police were there to arrest them both. The investigation unfolded. Batgirl was there to see the murder weapon - a pistol - uncovered. Bruce and Sasha were questioned; the 911 tape was played for them. Neither would say where they were, only that they didn't do it. At the Clocktower, Batgirl realized that Bruce was Batman. Officer Dick Grayson visited his adoptive father and got the cold shoulder. Tim's hands were tied, he was "grounded" and had to stay on campus at his boarding school. Alfred, who'd been staying with him, returned to Wayne Manor. Wayne was denied bail due to possible flight at the first hearing. Oracle sent Black Canary to investigate. They learned that Wayne had purchased the pistol and registered it in his name. They also learned the victim, a journalist, was putting together an expose on Batman. Through audio-taped notes and computer files, Oracle learned that she'd learned Bruce's secret. The Blackgate inmates gave "Fancy Pants" Wayne a hard time; after days of abuse he snapped. Three were put in the infirmary. Sasha continued her silence. Oracle and Nightwing investigated people who might want to take Bruce Wayne - not Batman - down. Dick and Tim had a falling out when Dick refused to believe Bruce was guilty, while Tim thought it a possibility. The Batsquad continued whittling down the list of possible framers. Bruce escaped custody during a transfer of venue. He was confronted by Batgirl, Nightwing, Robin, and Oracle when he returned to the cave. He told them that Bruce Wayne, his made up persona flew off in a private jet earlier in the day. Dick flew off the handle; the two battled it out. The fight stopped when Nightwing accidentally busted the case housing Jason's Robin costume. Batman left the cave.
