They scooped everyone on the casting of Brandon Routh in Superman Returns, and now Latino Review says The Joker has been cast in the Batman Begins sequel:
We were first to tell the world that Brandon Routh was going to be the new Superman. Now here we are at it again as we just got word from A VERY TRUSTED SOURCE that the offer last night was officially made to Heath Ledger to star as The Joker in the Batman Begins Sequel!

LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- Batman is heading into a sequel, titled "The Dark Knight," and he will face off against the Joker, this time played by Heath Ledger.
Christian Bale, the star of last year's "Batman Begins," will reprise his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Christopher Nolan is returning to the directing chair.
Ledger, Oscar-nominated this year for his role in "Brokeback Mountain," resurrects a murderous role memorably played in 1989 by Jack Nicholson in Tim Burton's "Batman."
"Batman Begins" was a critical and commercial hit, and relaunched the Warner Bros. franchise.
An early 2007 start date is being eyed for the sequel. Before then, Bale and Nolan will be in theaters this fall with the Disney release "The Prestige."

Dear me, now they have a gay cowboy playing me. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

source BATMAN ON FILM www.batman-on-film.comAuthor: Jett Heath Ledger has finally spoken about playing The Joker. Here's what he had to say (via THE TORONTO STAR): "It's definitely going to stump people. I think it'll be more along the lines of how the Joker was meant to be in the comics, darker and more sinister."
“I wouldn't have thought of me, either. But it's obviously not going to be what Jack Nicholson did. It's going to be more nuanced and dark and more along the lines of A Clockwork Orange kind of feel. Which is, I think, what the comic book was after: less about his laugh and more about his eyes.” Right on Heath, right on man! One of the most ridiculous "qualifications" for The Joker amond a small portion of fans was "Can Ledger do 'The Laugh?'" Ledger's right -- it IS all about the eyes...

Hey I'm starting to get pysched about this one. I'm willing to give the guy a chance, I shook my head over Michael Keaton and Jack in the first one, and it worked. If you've got a good writer, which judging by "Begins", they do and good actors, it'll work. I also like that Joker's gonna be darker. But I still wish they would've done the Red Hood storyline.

Bob Gough 9/13/2006 Source: Dark Horizons The Dark Knight's Heath Ledger really knows how to endear himself to comic book fans. Heath Ledger, cast as the Joker in Chris Nolan's The Dark Knight follow up to Batman Begins, says he's got no love for the source material. Talking with Dark Horizons on how his Oscar nomination has affected his career, Ledger said: "I think there's a new level of interest kind of thing but I haven't really acted on it, since the only thing I've really done since is this Todd Haynes film and The Joker." Already a controversial choice, Ledger continued that ordinarily taking a part in a super-hero film wouldn't interest him. "I actually hate comic book movies, like f***ing hate them, they just bore me s***less and they're just dumb. But I thought what Chris Nolan did with Batman was actually really good, really well directed, and Christian Bale was really great in it." Ledger says he's looking forward to playing a truly evil character. "He's going to be really sinister and it's going to be less about his laugh and his pranks and more about just him being a just a f***ing sinister guy." However, his agent is happy with the money the role brings: "I'm sure they're super happy that I'm doing this, because this is the first time I've really kind of taken something like that, so they're over the moon. But I think it's just going to be a really fun experience, and I love to dress up and wear a mask." No costumes have been designed, but Ledger says that "I've seen a few interesting designs on the look and I think that it's going to look pretty cool."

Heath Ledger recently talked about his upcoming turn as The Joker in THE DARK KNIGHT:
Does he have an idea how he'll play The Joker? "I definitely have an image in my head. I definitely have something up my sleeve. I want to be very sinister."
Did he ever read any Batman comics? "No and I think that’s kind of helping me a little bit. I was never really a fan of comic books or comic book movies. I never despised them but I was never one to read them."
Regarding which comics has he been given to read: "THE KILLING JOKE was the one that was handed to me. I think it’s going to be the beginning of The Joker. I guess that book explains a little bit of where he’s from but not too much. From what I’ve gathered, there isn’t a lot of information about The Joker and it’s left that way."
Any tests with The Joker makeup? "No, but I did do 3-D image scanning. I don’t know what they’re doing with it."
Looks like some one got to him and told him he better stop saying he "f**king hates" comics. We fanboys can be a surlly bunch. And even if he's good, the net and magazine have enough Batfans to make it where this guy doesn't return.

Ledger's looking forward to playing The Joker
Author: Jett Tuesday, November 14, 2006 - 6:29 AM Heath Ledger has spoken again about his upcoming turn as The Joker in an interview for his film CANDY:
"I think [getting the role] was tougher for other people to comprehend than it was for me. I'm looking forward to it. A part of me feels like I've been warming up to [playing the Joker] for years. In THE BROTHERS GRIMM, [director] Terry Gilliam helped me put on a sort of clown act and adjust to that sort of pace. And I feel it's something within me I know how to do. I like putting on a mask. It'll be dark and sinister and exciting."
"Not being a huge comic book fan, and not one to really follow comic book movies, I'm relaxed about it. The kids in the neighborhood are on to me, though."
Not being a huge comic fan, yeah didn't he say he hates comics. Well I guess it doesn't matter, if he does a good job. Maybe he'll see the light and come on over to our side.

"I actually hate comic book movies, like f***ing hate them, they just bore me s***less and they're just dumb..." I'm still not getting past this part. Warner Brothers must have called him in and said "look dousche bag, we took a beating from the fan boys for letting Schumacher f**k with Batman, we don't need you pissing off the fan base for the project starts, f**ker"

He does seem to be changing his tune a bit. I don't care. Hey Tom Cruise is a putz and I like some of his movies.
