February 24, 2009 HEATH Ledger's Oscar recognises his great achievement as an actor, but it can do little to replace the void in the young life of his daughter, Matilda. The best supporting actor award was accepted for her by the family, but it cannot replace the father who was so close to her in the three short years they were together. Ledger died after an accidental drug overdose and the award was only the second time the Oscar has been presented posthumously. It was a triumph over the gossip surrounding Ledger's death. Matilda will come to cherish the award in memory of a brilliant career. Ledger was a boy from Western Australia who went to Hollywood and found stardom, becoming one of its finest actors. He missed out on the Oscar for best actor in 2006 in Brokeback Mountain, but his role as The Joker in the Batman movie, The Dark Knight, put him among the film industry's elite. The Oscars are often said to be contrived, with the members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences moved as much by political and emotional considerations as by anything they see on the screen. But in Ledger's case, the praise has been overwhelming, making him the shortest-priced favourite for an Oscar in the history of the awards. His movies will be remembered and watched proudly by a daughter deprived of growing up with a devoted dad. Ledgers Family accepts his Oscar www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-oIPCH7ba4
